2008-2009
After reading the play Romeo and Juliet and then watching the movie, students finished their scrapbooks by writing friendly letters to Mr. Shakespeare himself or to one of the characters.

Read and Enjoy!

Dear Mr. Shakespeare,

How are you? You must be wondering why I’m writing to you even though I don’t know you. Well, I’m just writing to you to tell you that I really admire your work and when you produced Romeo and Juliet I thought it was a great play. Even though I didn’t understand everything, I still liked it. I didn’t just like the play, I loved it!

There are a lot of things I liked about the play. One of them is that Romeo is a sweet character because he cares about people, especially Juliet.  Another thing I liked about the play is that the nurse is very funny, especially the words that she used.  The last thing that I liked about the play was that the friar did not have a horse and his servant had to walk to Mantua to tell Romeo about Juliet’s death.  The servant did not get there soon enough.

I also have some questions for you.  My first question is why did you make Romeo and Juliet die at the end? Why couldn’t you just get them to stay together and make them happy forever!  I would have done that because then the audience wouldn’t feel sad and emotional by all the tears. If you had them stay together, the audience would have eyes filled with tears of joy and excitement. Instead you kept Romeo and Juliet apart and the audience was sad because Romeo’s dreams were dying.

I would also like to know how you came up with an idea so emotional. You must have had a very touching soul if you were in many theaters acting and I have a slight feeling that you really wanted to do this your whole life. Did you ever have help when you were writing and producing the play or did you do this all by yourself?  Finally, did you ever have brothers and sisters?

Now, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have six brothers and two sisters (I bet you are thinking wow this family must really annoy each other but no we don’t really). We are 11 in all. Did you ever dream of doing something when you were growing up and then think well, I know that I’m never going to be able to make it? I did at first, when I was younger. I wanted to be a regular kindergarten teacher but then I thought I’m never going to be able to make it because I don’t have the passion and the interest in my heart to do this as a career. I think what I really want to be is a special education teacher. This is a teacher who helps people only with disabilities or special needs. It’s perfect for me because I lived with people who have special needs or disabilities my whole life and I’m good at it.  So what I’m trying to say is, did you ever want to do something but actually couldn’t because you wanted to follow another path because your heart knew it wasn’t the right way for you? I‘m asking this question because I want to know whether you always wanted to be in theater to make plays ever since you were born or if you if you also tried a different direction which wasn’t the right way for you?

Could you tell me more about you? What do you like? What do you do? Have you had any interesting experiences that helped you to become a great writer? I don’t know you and would like to know more about you. (Well, besides the fact that you produced and wrote the play Romeo and Juliet and that you also made up words).

By the way, why did you make up words? Why didn’t you just stick with the words you already knew and just make the play?  Also about the play, (I’m sorry that I’m jumping though things but I’m a girl with a mind that has a lot of questions and no answers) why did you make the nurse so funny and not the other characters despite the fact that she is Juliet’s aide? Why did you call her nurse instead of nanny? You fooled me because I thought that she was a real nurse. I didn’t think it would be that kind of nurse when I took the character. You are a confusing man you know that?

I would like to tell you some things about life today.  In this world we are very lucky to have the advantages of modern things such as cars, (so we don’t need horses). Also we have cell phones so we can call anyway and not have to worry about having change for the pay phone. Last but not least, we have actors that are girls and boys and great big TV screens. We also have a lot of things for babies that are new, such as a new wonderful balancing thingy!

I am very happy that I had a chance to write to you. I hope you have a great day!

                                                                   Sincerely,

                                                                   Segolene

Dear Juliet,

My name is Jessica but you can call me Jess. I would like to ask you some questions and tell you some things that you might want to know about my class. I am also going to tell you what I liked and didn’t like about the story of Romeo and Juliet.

First, I just want to tell you what you could have done better. I think it would have been smart if you had told your parents about your husband Romeo. It would have saved you from many pains because you still would be alive to share your love with your husband.

Another thing I’m going to tell you some things I like and did not like about your life. I like your love for Romeo and that you are very loyal to him. I like your Romeo because I think he is cute.  I dislike you not telling your family you are married.

Now, I have three questions I want to ask you. The first one is what was it like not to have underwear? I saw that you did not have it when you were getting dressed. My second one is what was it like to be married? I would like to know if I ever get married how it would feel. The last one is what was it like to dance back then? To me your dancing is a little creepy, no offense.

Well, I think now you would like to know some things about us so I’m going to tell you three facts about us. First one now is that girls now wear pants but we still have dresses but not like yours. They are less fancy and shorter. My second one is we use pencils to write with now, not feathers. This makes it less messy. Now the last one is when we have parties we have very different music then what you had. We have rock, hip hop, pop, jazz, and rap.

Well that is all. I hope you write back and if not, oh well.

                       From,

                                      Jessica

Dear Mr. Shakespeare,

My name is Sherry and I am 16 years old. I am a student in Montgomery High School. I read Romeo and Juliet in Mrs. Mintz’s English Class.

I really loved this story!  I think the characters you chose were very interesting.  I also liked that the story was about teenagers and romance and my favorite part was when they were at the ball.  Another part I liked was when Romeo climbed up the tree to see Juliet because it touched my heart.  I think Romeo felt depressed because he had to leave Juliet all the time.

Now, can I ask you some questions?  How old were you when you started writing? My next question is how did you make up all of those new words? Finally, did you ever like to draw? I do, a lot.

My life in 2008 is very different from yours in the 1600s. In my life today we do not use feather pens to write.  We use pens and pencils instead. Pens are made out of plastic, metal, springs, and ink comes out of the pen. Pencils are made out of real lead and we have to sharpen them. Another change is that we do not use horses to deliver the mail. Today we use trucks. A very big difference is that men and women perform in our plays. In the 1600s your plays you used men only. It’s really different from the old days!

When I read this book I got so excited about it and I really liked reading the play.

                                                                           Sincerely,

                                                                         Sherry

Dear Juliet,

I’m Michelle, I’m still in school and I’m 16 years old.  Can you believe it?  I am a big fan of your story. I read and saw the movie in school. Just in between you and me, the guy that played Romeo is hot!

The reason why I like the book was that it was the way a love story should be.  It is how I want to meet my dream guy.  You are so lucky.  How did you live with yourself when Romeo was banished out of the city?  I know that it was Romeo’s fault that Tybult died because we read it in the book.

What was life like in the 1600’s?  What was it like to wear a dress all the time?  I could not do that.  What was it like to get married at 12 years old?  I am 16 years old and I am not married.  I will not get married until I am 20 years old.  Why did you have to get married to the man your parents picked for you?  I would not want to marry the man that my parents pick for me.

Some of the things I think you would like about 2008 are that women and girls have a right to a good education just like men.  We have cell phones.  You may ask what is a cell phone?  It is a thing you can talk into to talk to another person.  We do not ride horses, we drive cars.  A car is better than a horse.

Well Juliet, I hope that all’s well. As you can see, my life is very different from yours. I will write back soon, send my love to Romeo!

                        LOVE,

                        Michelle
