Option II Application Process
For Students looking to take a summer school course AT MHS please click here Montgomery High School students are required to complete an application which must include an attached course syllabus/curriculum. The completed application must be given to the Montgomery High School Guidance Department and approved by the content area supervisor and school principal (or designee) PRIOR to enrolling in a course. The course must be offered by an accredited institution and must meet or exceed NJ Core Curriculum Standards. Such courses may not take the place of a course that is a required academic course (i.e. English 9-12, U.S. History I & II, etc.) for graduation; however, it may be taken for advancement (i.e. in math courses) only when approved by the content area supervisor. Any course taken by an MHS student without the prior approval of administration will NOT be granted course credits.
Deadlines: We are no longer accepting applications for Option II summer courses for 2013. The deadline for those submissions was May 15, 2013. For the fall semester, Option II applications must be submitted by September 12th and course must be completed by January 15th. For the spring semester, Option II applications must be submitted by January 9th and the course must be completed by June 1st. For full year courses, Option II applications must be submitted by September 30th and the course must be completed by June 1st.
Any Option II course not completed by the course deadline will not be eligible for course credit.

- Obtain an Option II Application by clicking on this link.
- Attach course description of the course.
- State your rationale for the request for Option II credit: (i.e., to fulfill a specific graduation requirement, to be able to take a course that is required for the next sequential course, to mediate a conflict in the student’s schedule, to explore an area of interest not offered through the MHS curriculum).
- After completing the application, submit it to Guidance for approval.
- Proficiency assessments are used for placement purposes and may also be required for Option II credits to be received. For math courses students must show a minimum proficiency on the designated assessment for the course taken. The grade earned on the assessment will determine placement in the following course or the student’s ability to advance to the next course. These assessments will be administered by the MHS department supervisor or designee. These assessments are aligned with NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. Dates available for proficiency testing are August 8th and August 15th at 9am. Students must choose the date when they submit the application. For other courses students should be prepared to submit a portfolio of work completed, if requested by the department supervisor.
- Upon receipt of an official transcript from the institution, the transcript will be updated and, if necessary, your child’s schedule adjusted. The transcript will reflect a P=Pass or F=Fail.
What goes into the review process?
The review consists of many factors including evaluation and comparison of the syllabus/curriculum (scope and sequence) to the MHS curriculum and the accreditation of the institution. All confirmations of approval will be e-mailed.
