Village Elementary School
The Village Elementary School community is committed to providing children in grades three and four with an academically challenging program in a nurturing and supportive environment. Our goal is to teach children to become independent learners and to help them apply skills developed in the primary grades. The Village School staff, in partnership with parents and the larger Montgomery community, delivers a rich and varied program designed to prepare children to excel as students and to become life-long learners ready for a changing world.
As children progress through the upper elementary grades, reading and writing change focus. The focus of the literacy program is to create fluent readers and writers whose command of language is exemplary. In mathematics and science, children thrive in an environment that is rich in problem solving and inquiry. In social studies, children move from learning about their community to an in-depth understanding of the culture and diversity that makes our country unique.
Children at Village School also have regular opportunities to continue to study art, music, and physical education. In fourth grade, children may choose to begin the formal study of a band or orchestra instrument. Students may also choose to participate in extra-curricular chorus, band or orchestra programs. Children in both third and fourth grades continue to benefit from formal Spanish introduction taught by certified teachers of Spanish.
A very special feature of the curriculum at Village School is the integrated use of technology to support classroom instruction. Children learn and practice a variety of software applications: word processing, presentation and multi-media software, local research tools, the Internet, video conferencing, a school WeatherBug station, and other video and digital media. The school has a computer lab, media center lab, newsroom for broadcasting student-delivered morning announcements, as well as a video conferencing center for regular instruction. Each classroom is also equipped with at least four computers. Teachers and students regularly use technology tools to enrich every discipline from art to mathematics.
Village School has an active and well-integrated character education program. Every month, one of the six pillars of character is highlighted throughout the school. Fourth graders deliver daily morning video/news announcements which offer examples of positive behaviors that students are encouraged to model. Teachers create opportunities in all areas of the curriculum for students to examine and make good moral and ethical choices.
Parent involvement at Village School is an integral part of the school’s culture. Because the PTA provides countless hours of volunteer service, the Village Elementary School is a richer community in which children come first.
