We have a very busy month planned and I wanted to share some important
The children continue to work on their small moment stories in writing workshop.
Over the month, we will learn to revise our stories by working with a partner and
discover what makes a strong lead and ending. We will learn to focus on the most
important part of the story and zoom in by including our 5 senses. Later, we will
revise our stories by learning from mentor authors such as Ezra Jack Keats and
In reading, the children have been learning to take charge of their own reading
by deciding how a book should be read, choosing their own “just right” books, as
well as reading with stamina, fluency and understanding through retelling. Next,
we will be reviewing strategies of decoding and making meaning of new words.
We are beginning to ‘post’ our thoughts as we read. We will learn to support our
thinking by jotting down evidence from the text.
In math, we will complete Topic 1, place Value and begin Topic 2 which covers
adding 3- digit numbers with and without regrouping. Please encourage your
child to practice their addition and subtraction math facts to 20 at home.
Our Fall Math Benchmark will be administered near the end of the month. Review materials were sent home via the backpack.
In social studies, we are building our classroom community though a variety of
Responsive Classroom activities. We are about to begin word study and our first
science unit: Materials and Properties
