ESL  - English as a Second Language is now more accurately known as ELL - English Language Learners. This is because English may be a student's 3rd or 4th language.

The ELL course focuses on the four language domains; speaking, listening, reading, and writing.  This is taught through social studies and science content with an emphasis on academic language. We currently use the National Geographic REACH curriculum. The classes are small groups in order to provide individualized support.

Early in the year, students are assessed to see where their English language proficiency is.  Students who benefit from more support with social and academic language functions are placed in two ELL classes.  In the spring, the student's English proficiency is reevaluated using the state-mandated WIDA Access 2.0 assessment.
