Attendance Update - 2026-27 School Year

Regular attendance directly supports student academic achievement and ensures consistent access to valuable classroom resources. We are reaching out to clarify an update regarding how medical-related absences are recorded to ensure full alignment with District Regulation and Policy 5200.

Per district policy, excused absences under the medical provision are strictly designated for necessary and unavoidable medical or dental appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of the school day, supported by official documentation from the doctor’s office. Effective immediately, excused status under this provision will apply strictly to the specific day of the documented appointment, meaning additional days spent at home recovering from an illness will no longer be classified as excused medical appointments, regardless of a doctor's note.

Days spent at home recovering from an illness will be recorded as "unexcused". We recognize that the word "unexcused" can sound punitive, but it is simply an administrative classification aligned with state coding and district policy. Marking a sick day as "unexcused" does not mean you or your child did anything wrong; keeping a sick child home to rest and recover remains the expected and responsible choice.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we maintain accurate attendance records in compliance with state regulations. Please feel free to reach out to your school’s main office if you have any questions.
