Upcoming Start Strong Assessment
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to school. This year we are delighted to begin the 2021-2022 school year back together again. As you may recall, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Jersey Department of Education cancelled the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) in the Spring of 2021. Instead, and only for fall of 2021, students will take an assessment called Start Strong. The Start Strong Assessment is intended to:
- Provide an early indication of the level of support students may need based upon the prior year’s academic standards.
- Be administered quickly and provide immediate results.
- Serve as New Jersey’s federally required general assessments for the 2020-2021 school year in English language arts (ELA)/mathematics/science, including public reporting of school-level results disaggregated by subgroup.
Start Strong Basics
New Jersey’s Start Strong assessments are based on prior-year academic standards. Students are not expected to study or prepare for these assessments. Instead, this assessment is meant to provide information about what students learned during the 2020-2021 school year.
The NJ Department of Education expects schools to administer the Start Strong assessments in fall 2021 to all students in:
- ELA grades 4-10
- Mathematics grades 4-8
- Algebra I
- Algebra II
- Science grades 6, 9, and 12
Students will take Start Strong sometime between October 1, 2021 – October 22, 2021. Your child’s vice principal will provide specific dates and times. Start Strong occurs in one class period, is untimed, and for most students takes about 45-60 minutes. Students who have an IEP or 504 plan will receive accommodations accordingly.
Your child’s score has no impact on high school graduation and will not appear on a report card, transcript, or used for class placement purposes. Parents and caregivers will be notified when student reports have been posted to the Genesis parent portal. For more information on the Start Strong Assessment, please visit the district website.
Should you have any questions, please reach out to me or your child’s vice principal.
