Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Panov

Educator, author, and violinist Sergei Panov is dedicated to instilling a love for music, self-expression, and self-realization in his students. His mission is to teach orchestra in a direct, simple, and goal-oriented way.

Sergei grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 12, settling in New Jersey. With a mother who teaches piano and a father who builds musical instruments, his path naturally led to a deep passion for music and education. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance at Temple University under the guidance of the late Helen Kwalwasser and served as concertmaster of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra under the late Joseph Primavera.

During his university years, Sergei discovered his true passion for music education. He presented on this topic at the New Jersey Music Educators Association Conferences and Rowan University. He has also served as the manager of the Central Jersey High School Region Orchestra and led the New Jersey All-State Violin Sectionals.

As an orchestra teacher at Lower Middle School in Montgomery, NJ, Sergei relishes the opportunity to cultivate a love of music in younger generations. He is also the author of method and scale books that are sold worldwide, further contributing to the field of music education.

  • We will be using the following three online resources in addition to the **Essential Elements Book 1**

    **Note Reading (Free):**
    https://www.musictheory.net/exercises/note
A completely free resource to practice naming notes in the clef of your instrument. Click on the settings cogwheel in the top right corner to adjust the clef, note range, and accidentals to suit your needs.

    **Music Theory (Free):**
    https://www.musictheory.net/lessons
A free resource to learn music theory and understand how music notation works. It's a great tool for building a solid foundation in music theory.

**Sight Reading (13 free exercises per month/$32.99 per year membership):**
    https://www.sightreadingfactory.com/practice/sr/instrument?family=strings
Sight reading is crucial for auditions, such as those for regional and youth orchestras. It's also an essential skill that makes learning and playing music much more enjoyable. This website is what is used for sight reading in region and all-state auditions, so it's a fantastic resource to use.
