    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The basic emphasis of this course is to expose the students to and for the students to learn about a variety of physical activities, which are invigorating, fun to do, and which contribute to a positive physical, social, and emotional growth.  These programs will enhance the total individual and will hopefully lead to a lifetime of enjoyment of physical activity and a pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.

    PROFICIENCIES:

The goal of this course is that the students should be able to:

    1.                  Develop and consistently demonstrate leadership and fellowship skills.

    2.                  Develop and demonstrate at a novice skill level, basic skills in as many kinds of activities as possible.

    3.                  Develop and consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship.

    4.                  Continually develop good safety habits while playing sports and partaking in physical activity.

    5.                  Develop physical fitness by partaking in activities, which enhance their endurance, coordination, strength, agility, and speed.

    6.                  Develop and consistently demonstrate skills and activities suitable for after school play.

    7.                  Perform and develop the areas of flexibility, abdominal, upper body strength, agility, and endurance.

    8.                  Develop trust and cooperative skills with peers and teachers through a variety of cooperative and trust activities.

    Students will be expected to:

    1.                  Maintain a high level of participation and be prepared  for class every day.  This includes appropriate athletic footwear (no fashion sneakers) and socks.  Sneakers that do not have a back are not allowed to be worn in class.  We advise that students bring a change of footwear for both our outdoor and indoor activities. New footwear does not need to be purchased; a pair of old sneakers would be great for days of inclement weather. Good personal hygiene should be practiced before and after each lesson; use of deodorant/anti-perspirant is encouraged, as well as washing with soap and water.

    2.                 Dress appropriately for class. Appropriate attire for athletic movement. Point deduction will result for inappropriate dress.

Examples of dress that will not be tolerated: Tank tops with straps of ANY width, short-shorts, etc.  Shirts should be long enough to be tucked into your child’s shorts/pants.  Undergarments should not be seen.

Students must wear appropriate footwear for class participation. Students have the option to bring a combination lock and use lockers for their belongings. However, they must be removed at the conclusion of each class. All other class procedures and rules apply in both the 5th & 6th grade.

    3.                  Attend class regularly and punctually.

    4.                  Demonstrate a positive attitude and contribute to learning in class.

    5.                  Demonstrate skill improvement through game participation to the best of their ability.

    6.                    Complete successfully any written work that is assigned such as tests, reports, or projects.

WE CANNOT LOCK THE ENTRANCE AND EXIT DOORS OF THE LOCKER ROOMS BECAUSE SOME STUDENTS MAY ARRIVE LATE, LEAVE EARLY OR HAVE THE NEED TO USE THE RESTROOMS DURING CLASS TIME.

Each student is required to participate to the best of his/her ability.  AT NO TIME WILL A STUDENT’S SKILL INFLUENCE HIS/HER GRADE.  Students are expected to attempt to work towards improving their abilities and demonstrating good sportsmanship.  Only a lack of effort will cause a grade to be lowered.
