5th Grade Language Arts

  • Unit 1: Non-Fiction Reading and Writing - 

    Students will learn how to approach non-fiction texts and use a variety of sources to write informatively on a topic. 

    The concepts behind non-fiction reading and writing will be carried over into students' Social Studies classes throughout the rest of the school year. 

    Unit 2: Narrative Reading - 

    Students will learn how to approach fiction texts and write about various story elements within a given text. 

    During this unit, students will also engage in book clubs and learn the importance and value of sharing and communicating within small groups.

    Unit 3: Literary Analysis - 

    Students will learn to analyze and write about text on a deeper level. 

    By the end of the unit, students will be expected to compare and contrast two different texts within an essay that contains and introduction, a conclusion, and multiple body paragraphs.

    Unit 4: Narrative Writing -

    Students will learn to write a personal narrative that incorporates the narrative fiction elements learned in Unit 2.

    Students will be guided through the planning, writing, and re-writing process.

    Unit 5: Skills Review -

    Students will review Units 1 through 4.

    This short unit serves the dual purpose of reviewing skills already taught and providing students with some test-taking strategies to prepare them for state assessments. 

    Unit 6: Fantasy Book Clubs - 

    Students will learn about the story elements that are unique to the fantasy genre.

    In this unit, students will work in book clubs and write informational and comparative responses to prompts about various texts, while utilizing the skills they acquired throughout the school year.

    In each unit, students will also learn grammar and vocabulary.
