Contemporary Issues and Leadership
  • Welcome to Contemporary Issues and Leadership!

This semester honors elective course will examine the ever-changing world of the 21st century with particular emphasis on current events. We will accomplish this through the analysis of the major events of recent years and how they link to and impact us today.

Students have so far spent their academic studies learning about human history over centuries. The purpose of this course is to bring students up to speed on the history that has been happening since they were born. This aims to better prepare them for adulthood as knowledgeable and informed participants in our democratic republic.

Throughout the course, students will be expected to engage in critical thinking, drawing from historical context to analyze and evaluate approaches to address present-day issues that impact both the nation and the world. In parallel with our examination of these broader issues, there is an additional focus on civic engagement and leadership. A key feature of this course is the hands-on and experiential component. It involves active engagement within the community, including interactions with the school community, local leaders, and primary research.

As an Honors course, we have a Summer/Fall assignment (depending on if you are taking the class Fall or Spring semester).
