MHS Marching Band 2013
  • How You Can Help With Marching Band

Getting a marching band of our size and caliber out on the field every week is no easy feat and we need everyone's help!

    Students

    Students must arrive:

    • Early!
    • With his or her instrument in good working order, along with reeds/valve oil/cork grease, as appropriate
    • With band-issued clean white gloves as appropriate for their section (unless they've been left in the uniform bag)
    • Wearing high black socks
    • Wearing Dinkles (aka, marching band shoes) or guard shoes (unless they've been left in their uniform bag or in their locker)
    • Wearing a black t-shirt (official band t-shirt, section t-shirt, or any black t-shirt)
    • With hair styled properly
    Parents

There are several ways in which parents can offer direct support to the marching band. We simply can't do it without many eager parents. Here's how:

    • Fit uniforms
During the first few days of band camp, every student needs to be measured for his or her uniform. The more volunteers, the easier the job; no special skills required. We also need a few people to help with some simple sewing.

    • Donate a case of water
We give the students a bottle of water when they're in the stands. When the weather is warm, they really need to hydrate before and after their performance. Your donation is most appreciated!

    • Chaperone: Uniform Crew
Helping with the uniforms is rewarding! We need a team of about 6 uniform volunteers for every game and festival. Here's how it works: Each uniform has a number. The uniforms are stored in numerical order in a large closet in the band room. You will move the uniform bags to rolling carts in the hallway. A band director will call the students to line up by number, and you will hand them their uniform bag. As the students leave the band room, you will inspect them to ensure that everyone is properly attired. After the game, students will hang their uniform in their bag and bring it to you to check that the jacket and pants are hung properly. You will take the bag and hang it back in the closet in numerical order. It's a simple, fast-paced job that's fun and rewarding -- and a great opportunity to get to know some of the students and other parents.

    • Chaperone: Safety
In addition to their specific jobs, volunteers also ensure the safety of our students by making sure they are accompanied by an adult at ALL times.
