    Left side activity suggestions for your lab notebook:
    Read through the ingredient lists of commercial products found in your kitchen, medicine cabinet, or garage.  Find chemical formulas which follow the rules for naming chemical compounds you have learned so far in class.  Write both names and formulas for the compounds you've found.  If you don't know how to write a symbolic formula for a particular ingredient, then it probably doesn't follow the rules we've learned in class, so you should look for a different ingredient which does!

    Draw pictures of how you think the electron density cloud might appear around some compounds you are already familiar with:  salt (NaCl), and water (H2O), and glass (SiO2).  How did you decide which elements within each compound carry the greater density of electrons?  How did you represent electron density in your drawing?

    Find a site on-line that talks about "chemical nomenclature" or "chemical naming".  Study the website thoroughly.  Complete any problem sets available.  Write a one paragraph review of the site in your journal.  Would the site be useful for helping other students master the chemical naming rules?  More helpful than other resources you've seen?  What are the strengths and weaknesses of the site.
